My name is Oliver and I have been a vocal instructor at KLVS studio for the past 3 years coaching students consistently. I have been studying Speech Level Singing with Kathryn as a student for 9 years.
My focus is on vocal technique and I succeed in improving students’ voices so that singing feels easier and more controlled. I am a Certified Profty Vocal Teacher where I have learned about the ‘Common Sense Singing’ technique approach from Greg Enriquez. At Profty I also learned about Vocal Style from Monique B. Thomas and Justin Levy. After implementing Rhonda Carlson’s work on Performance Technique myself for several years prior, I then studied with her on Performance Technique and Acting-Through-Song to sharpen my coaching skills.
Where I excel is at teaching students how to have stage presence. I have a track record of giving students the stage presence required to captivate audiences. Audiences note how students do a great performance time and time again with my support.
I focus on vocal technique first so that the student feels confident in their singing ability and so they have solid foundations. Vocal technique, as great as it is, can be quite repetitive, so I make sure to keep lessons fun and engaging. Then I move onto vocal style so that the student can be creative with their voice and learn skills to match their chosen genre. Once the student feels confident in their vocal technique and with the style of the song, I then teach performance technique and acting-through-song. I strongly believe singing is more than just reciting words, and audiences want to feel something through the story of a song.
I am flexible in my approach to teaching so will adjust my focus to the direction that the student wants. I have experience teaching a range of genres including Rock, Musical Theatre, Pop, Folk, Country, Jazz, Metal, Heavy Rock, Indie Rock & Pop, and Soul.
My understanding and implementation of vocal technique speaks for itself as I have successfully prepared students for auditions to get into Theatre Schools.
I am very experienced at working with both children and adults. I often work with older adults where the vocal technique I give them, along with their practice makes an astounding difference to their voice which often exceeds their expectations.
My work with children, teenagers and young adults has been supported by my background as a Learning Support Assistant in schools.
I give clear practice at the end of each lesson so the student knows what to practise each week. I make sure that practice is manageable and realistic so that students feel clear and confident in what they are doing before they leave the lesson.
I am passionate about songwriting and students often ask me advice on their songwriting. I give them the tools I’ve learned from my studies and personal experience to move them forward and get them unstuck with their songwriting. I have studied three Songwriting courses at the Glasshouse taught by talented songwriter Frankie Jobling. During the courses, I learned key songwriting principals and collaborated with other songwriters. I continue to write songs of my own and I collaborate writing songs with other songwriters regularly.
One of the many rewarding aspects of teaching people how to sing is the confidence it brings them. Students often say how much more confident they feel, not just as a singer but more generally too.
Additionally, I am a regular performer in the North-East music scene and I am known for my eye-catching and creative performances. I perform under the stage name George Haywood. Audiences note my great voice and confidence in how I convey a story and emotion.
After lessons with me, students comment on how they have much more confidence can sing with more ease and range.
